NEW BERLIN — While people are spring cleaning and getting rid of their used items, Beth Marek and her 10-year-old grandson, Elliot Hovie, are taking items in, all with the purpose of being sold in a massive rummage sale. Beth said, it started with Elliot's idea to sell his toys and now it's turned into an opportunity to give back.
“He said well we can sell my toys and give the money to some charity,” said Beth.
“We couldn’t take it to GoodWill because it’s closed, and then I thought why don’t we just sell them and have a garage sale,” said Elliot.
All of the money raised from the rummage sale will go to "Exploit No More," a non-profit organization that helps fight human trafficking in the Milwaukee area.
“We knew the funds were going to go direct to the people and help them out...we want to raise awareness,” said Beth.
Once the community got wind of the garage sale fundraiser, donations started pouring in, from Kate Spade purses, to Harley Davidson bags.
“The out pouring of donations from a flier we handed out in our neighborhood resulted in a two car garage full of donations,” said Beth.
The family hopes to raise as much money as they can for the non-profit, and Beth hopes the community can be inspired from the idea of a 10-year-old.
“It makes me feel great that we’re helping some people,” said Elliot.
The rummage sale is Friday May 29th & 30th from 9:00 a.m.- 4:00 p.m. located at 17325 W Roosevelt Ave in New Berlin.
