MILWAUKEE -- While thousands across southeast Wisconsin celebrated the arrival of 2020 responsibly, police records indicate others marked the new year with gunshots.
There were 215 'ShotSpotter' calls on January 1 from 12:00 a.m. until 11:59 p.m., the period for which data is available. ShotSpotter is a program used by the Milwaukee Police Department that can roughly indicate where and when gunshots were fired.
Additionally, there were 138 shots fired calls during the same period. It is possible that some of those shots fired calls may have been counted as ShotSpotter calls, and vice versa

Despite the hundreds of reported gunshots, police only reported one shooting Wednesday that left someone with an injury. A 28-year-old man was shot during an argument with someone he knew, according to the department. He's being treated for non-life threatening injuries.
A 1-year-old child also died Wednesday. The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office is investigating that death as a homicide, though the details surrounding the death have not yet been made public.
