Milwaukee receives huge salt shipment

Additional salt needed to treat roads

The Milwaukee region just faced a pretty significant winter storm, and to fight the conditions, lots of salt is needed.

A big shipment of de-icing salt was received at the Port of Milwaukee Monday morning.

The shipment was a timely factor in helping keep the streets free and clear of snow and ice.

The Port of Milwaukee's Wayne Johnson says the shipment comes from Canada.

500 trucks are expected to be filled with salt to help keep the roads clear.

"It's always good to have enough salt, we did run out a few years ago," Johnson said. We ship salt out to municipalities in a 90 mile radius of Milwaukee. With the amount of salt that's been dumped on city streets within the last few days, they have to restock their supplies."

A portion of this delivery will also be bagged and sold for families and businesses to use.

The Port of Milwaukee handles close to 1 million tons of salt each year.

They are expecting three to four more shipments before the end of the year.
