Milwaukee police rescued two people from a smoking car after a serious crash early Saturday morning.

Police said the driver of a Ford sedan was speeding on Oklahoma Avenue near 8th Street when he lost control of his car and smashed into a tree.

Cell phone video shows smoke pouring out of the car.

Neighbors said officers sprang into action to save the driver and passenger trapped inside the vehicle.

"The car started on fire," said Debbie Otto.

She heard the crash and ran outside her house to see what happened.

"You could hear the windows break. Police smashed the car windows to get the people out.
You could hear the officer say 'Stay with me, stay with me.' You could hear the heart in the one guy yelling 'stay with us, stay with us'," Otto said.

Both the driver and the passenger were rushed to the hospital.

The family of the 43-year-old passenger said she is in very serious condition.

Milwaukee police said the 32-year-old driver suffered non-life threatening injuries and the case is being referred to the district attorney's office.
