Two 19-year-old men from Sturgeon Bay were caught with guns and drugs as they were leaving Homestead High School Saturday afternoon.

Mequon police pulled over Willard Hartman for making an illegal U-turn at Mequon Road and River Trail. Hartman allegedly told police that they were at Homestead watching a friend play basketball.

According to a criminal complaint, an officer smelled marijuana and searched Hartman's car. That led to the discovery of five guns: Three assault rifles and two handguns - as well as ammunition.

Benjamin Krohn, the passenger in the car, reportedly told police the guns belonged to him. He said he brought them "in case he wanted to trade or sell them to someone."

The complaint says Krohn also admitted that he had just smoked marijuana in the parking lot of Homestead High School.

Police found marijuana, an oxycodone pill, and drug paraphernalia inside the car, according to the complaint.

The complaint did not specify whether the men brought the guns into the school with them, or how long they were on school property.

They face a combined 25 charges for possessing firearms on school grounds, illegally carrying concealed weapons, and possession of drugs.

If convicted, both men could face several years behind bars and tens of thousands of dollars in fines.

They are both due in court March 6.
