MILWAUKEE — Yet another person was seriously hurt because of a reckless driver Wednesday morning.

Milwaukee Police said a speeding driver flew down Fond Du Lac Avenue near Capitol Drive, hit a 62-year-old man, and smashed into a bus shelter. The man who was hit suffered life-threatening injuries. The driver ran away but was eventually apprehended. Surveillance video captured the graphic scene.

"All I could do is walk away with tears in my eyes because it was sad," said Matthew Lewis, who works nearby and happened to see the crash unfold.

Lewis said he was one of the bystanders who rushed to help the victim. People in the neighborhood said the man who was hit is struggling with homelessness and known by many in the area.

"The guy comes inside the restaurant every day my boss gives him food now and then because we care about people out here," said Lewis.

"Knowing that you hurt somebody and possibly might’ve killed somebody and just take off and run away I don’t know how people can do that," said Bill Issa who works near the intersection.

People who work in the area said reckless driving is unfortunately too common there.

"We have at least two or three accidents every week at least it’s really sad," said Sakher Abuasi.

"Just drive safe. A lot of people around here don’t really drive safe that’s why these things end up happening, and people who have nothing to do with it end up getting hit," said Issa.
