MILWAUKEE — A 19-year-old man was pronounced dead Saturday night after he was swept up by waves in Lake Michigan.
The Milwaukee County Sheriff's Department responded to McKinley Beach around 8:41 p.m. Upon arrival, deputies discovered an adult male and two children had been in the water.
The two children were struggling to get to shore due to large waves and the man was attempting to help them get to shore.
The man was able to get one child to shore before he was swept up by waves. The second child was able to make it to shore on their own.
However, the man could not be found. The Milwaukee Fire Department’s Dive Rescue Team, as well as the Milwaukee Police Department, arrived at the scene and searched for the man. Eventually, he washed up onshore.
The Milwaukee Fire Department performed life-saving measures and the man was transported to a local hospital. Upon arrival, the man was pronounced dead.
Neither child required medical attention and left the scene uninjured.
The Milwaukee County Sheriff's Department is investigating the incident.
