WAUKESHA — After the tragic death of Milwaukee Police Officer Matthew Rittner, a local man decided to show his appreciation for his community's first responders.

On Friday morning, at the Waukesha County Sheriff's Department, a man dropped off dozens of cookies to show his gratitude and to tell officers they are "appreciated."

On Wednesday morning, Rittner became the third MPD officer to be killed in the last eight months in the line of duty.

"Police officers put their lives on the line every day for us. We must remember the sacrifices they make for us and how important their job is for our community," Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett said.

Not only was Rittner a police officer but he also was a well-loved, decorated United States Marine.

“He was the Marine that every other Marine looked up to,” said Max Zaruba, one of Rittner's best friends.

“He was someone you wanted in society.”
