MILWAUKEE — A man is dead after an early morning fire Tuesday near 16th and Hadley on the north side.

“When I got up to go to the bathroom, that’s when I heard sirens,” neighbor Cordelia Briggs said.

Crews were called to the fire just after 4:30 a.m. When they arrived, Battalion Chief Joseph Hegeman Jr. described seeing heavy smoke and fire coming from the second floor.

“It shakes you. When you hear somebody died in a fire … I’m shaken up. I got scared.” — neighbor Cordelia Briggs

“Personnel got on scene in a matter of minutes,” Hegeman said.

Firefighters then rescued two men from the home. A 41-year-old man survived, but the other man, whose age is unknown, was unresponsive when pulled from the fire and died.

“It shakes you. When you hear somebody died in a fire … I’m shaken up. I got scared,” Briggs said.

Hegeman stressed the importance of having working smoke detectors in homes as they continue to investigate this deadly situation.
