WEST ALLIS — One man is dead in a shooting near 56th and Greenfield on the border of West Allis and West Milwaukee, the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office and West Allis Police say.

Officers responded to a report of shots fired around 1:15 a.m. Friday. Neighbors say the shots woke up their usually quiet block.

"It's definitely not something I want to wake up to ever again," Amanda Johnson said. "I heard about four gunshots and some yelling followed by tires, not squealing, but burning rubber, I guess. That's all I can say about it. I hope I never experience it."

Johnson said she saw a dark, newer SUV leave the scene.

Johnson lives two doors away from where the victim collapsed in a yard. She said police focused on an area in the street. Chalk outlines were visible where bullet casings likely fell across the street from her home. She said when police got to the scene, they found the man near the steps of the home. They performed CPR, but police said he was pronounced dead at the scene.

"I never thought that would happen," Johnson said. "Especially two doors down from where I live."

Residents say the neighborhood is quiet. So this shooting has them shaken.

"Unusual, yes," Michelle Leon said. "Crimes are going to happen, no matter what. Burglary, someone breaking into a car, that's the norm. But gunfire? No."

Investigators were on scene until about 8 a.m. However, Johnson had a front row seat of everything from her balcony.

"I was sitting on the porch and you just kind of sit there like, 'This isn't happening,' " Johnson said. " 'Is this real?' Been kind of an emotional roller coaster. When I saw them carry him away, I shed a tear. What else can you do?"

There's no word yet on what caused the shooting. Police do not have anyone in custody and have not shared a description of a suspect or vehicle.

The shooting is an ongoing investigation, police at the scene said.
