BARABOO -- The proceedings lasted less than five minutes - a stark contrast with what Zachary Hays is accused to have done: a day-long crime spree.

Zachary Hays, 20, faces homicide charges in both Milwaukee and Sauk counties; Sauk County prosecutors also filed reckless endangerment charges.

The alleged crimes took place on Sunday, May 1st. In West Allis, investigators say Hays broke into a neighbor's apartment near 92nd and Arthur, then shot and killed 42-year-old Gabriel Sanchez.

A statewide law enforcement manhunt for Hays ended on I-94 in Sauk County, after police said Hays also shot and killed Tracy Czaczkowski, 44, of Buffalo Grove, Ill. Police believe Czaczkowski was the victim of a random drive by shooting, caught in the wrong place at the wrong time.

If convicted, Hays faces life in prison. He's due back in a Sauk County courtroom in July; a doctor's report is due to a Milwaukee County judge on June 22nd.
