MILWAUKEE — Black Market MKE is a new retail shop located on Hampton Ave., that opened about two weeks ago.
Inside the shop, you'll find the newest sneakers available but you'll then quickly find, it's about more than selling shoes and clothing. The shop is also investing in the lives of young children in Milwaukee.
“The reason why we chose this location is simple: We saw a need in the community,” said Adrian Herrera, Black Market MKE's Creative Director.
Behind the walls of shoes, is a study hall for kids, where children from first grade to twelfth grade can receive private 1-on-1 tutoring. The shop provides laptops, WiFi, and snacks for the kids.
“We are looking forward to serving as many kids as we can,” said Adrian.
Hashim Khan is in the 10th grade, he said his plate is full with school, sports an internship, and work. With school virtual, he said it’s nice having a space outside of the home where he can finish his school work and another person he can turn to for help.
“Having this area is a weight lifted off my shoulder so I can get my school work done,” said Hashim.
Adrian previously worked in education for six years and said creating a study hall space was important to him.
“Being a student at one point at this time in this neighborhood there were few areas where we could go and do homework,” said Adrian.
Adrian said it’s all about giving back to the community and creating opportunities for the next generation.
“If kids want to learn what it means to start a business or what do they have to do to become a doctor, those things might come simply to those who have those opportunities, as we all know, not everyone has those opportunities, so we provide the opportunity for local professionals to come in and give those workshops to kids,” said Adrian.
Adrian also runs a non-profit organization called Fades for Grades. Stating in the spring, kids can get free haircuts as long as they are excelling in academics and attendance.
