A significant class action settlement has been reached involving certain model LG refrigerators consumers purchased between January 1, 2014, and December 31, 2017.

Days ago, the settlement agreement received approval in the District Court of New Jersey. To view the settlement, click here.

According to court documents, it "...offers cash payments and prospective relief to approximately 1.55 million individuals who make up the Settlement Class."

Consumers allege the refrigerators "are prone to repeated cooling breakdowns" and that "the linear compressors in the LG refrigerators are defective and prone to fail, and that when failure occurs, the refrigerators cannot cool their contents."

TMJ4 News spoke with a Sheboygan man who had similar issues two years ago.

The settlement goes on to say, "Those who make the modest effort to document their claims are eligible for up to several thousand dollars in recovery, and those without documentation but who provide attestation may recover up to $450. There is no cap on the total payments LG will make to Class members."

The payments would be used to reimburse consumers who had to throw away spoiled food and who spent money on repairs. You don't have to be a part of the class-action suit to collect payment.

"As long as you have a covered model, and have the other qualifying information, you can still claim for benefits," said Amey Park, Associate with Berger Montague, the law firm involved in the case.

"You can start claiming now immediately on the settlement administrator's website," she continued.

Park advised consumers likely won't see the checks in the mail until next year since court proceedings need to be finalized.

TMJ4 News reached out to LG for comment and was told:

Throughout the industry, refrigerator service issues can sometimes relate to cooling performance. When, on occasion, any such issue arises, LG works hard to take good care of its customers.

The settlement resolves a pending lawsuit about alleged refrigerator cooling issues. Simply put, we agreed to the settlement to avoid further litigation costs and in the interest of customer satisfaction.

LG home appliances are enjoyed by tens of millions of Americans every day, and they are recognized by industry experts for reliability. Independent of the settlement, LG has expanded its customer service support. Under the settlement agreement, some consumers also may receive a cash payment and/or extended warranty.
