Milwaukee Health Department officials are meeting with groups around the city to curb fears and inform about the novel coronavirus.

Thursday night, representatives met with residents in the Halyard Park Neighborhood Meeting. Organizers of the gathering had requested someone from the health department speak about the virus.

Nick Tomaro, the city's Public Health Emergency Preparedness Coordinator and Jill LeStarge, RN, a public health nurse, talked to the dozen or so people who showed up.

Tomaro said the department expects to do more of these types of meetings.

"That's one of the most important things we are going to be doing. Trying to provide the best information we can," said Tomaro.

LeStarge told the crowd, "we can use all of you as our ambassadors for our message of 'let's keep the community safe.'"

In the 14 cases pending in Wisconsin, none of the cases are in the City of Milwaukee.

In addition to meeting with community members, the city is part of a Milwaukee County task force. Workgroups of doctors to establish best practices has also been launched.
