Lakeshore residents dealing with erosion after spring snowstorm

Living along Lake Michigan comes with the benefits of beautiful views but when the weather becomes hazardous, those scenic sites have to be protected.

This past weekend's powerful Winter Storm caused waves as high as 20 feet high to crash along the shoreline of Lake Michigan.

Longtime Caledonia resident Monica Bykowski recalls these waves as some of the worst waves she has ever seen.

“It was so loud the waves were coming in so high,” Bykowski said.

The dangerous waves were topping the Lakefront for over two days causing beach erosion and taking away land of some properties.

Bykowski was not sure of how her property faired after the storm but she was certain there would not be too much damage due to an investment in several three-ton rock barricades to fight the high waves that she made over 20 years ago.

“If you live on the lake you have to invest the money for erosion and if you don’t you’re going to lose your property,” Bykowski said.
