MILWAUKEE - Some restaurants have temporarily stopped selling products containing romaine lettuce in response to the E. coli outbreak.
Culver's and Noodles & Company are two of the restaurants who have responded to the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention recall.
The CDC announced on Friday that romaine lettuce grown in the Yuma, Arizona region was related to an E. coli outbreak in 11 states.
On Friday there were 35 cases of E. coli reported. A majority of the cases resulted in hospitalization. Three of the cases resulted in hemolytic uremic syndrome, a potentially life-threatening type of kidney failure.
Culver's announced that over 650 of their restaurants have stopped selling products containing Romaine lettuce, because of the recall.
A spokesperson from Culver's said they are looking into lettuce other than romaine and hope to be selling salads by next week.
Culver’s is acting with an abundance of caution placing the safety of our guests above all other considerations. Since the Centers of Disease Control issued its voluntary recall of Romaine lettuce on April 13, 2018, Culver’s 650+ restaurants have suspended sales of all entrée and side salads which contain Romaine lettuce. All remaining Romaine lettuce product has been discarded. The recall however does not involve the shredded iceberg lettuce contained in our ButterBurger, chicken or fish sandwiches. We are continuing to serve our valued guests and will keep them informed of any updates regarding our menu offerings.
Noodles & Company also has suspended their use of romaine lettuce until further notice.
A spokesperson from Noodles said, "there is no greater priority than the safety and well-being of Noodles' guests and team members."
Roundy's Supermarkets, Inc. appears to be not affected by the recall. The supermarket's main suppliers of romaine lettuce are Fresh Express and Organic Girl. Roundy's only gets their fresh romaine from California growers.
