Grupo Renacer is a band made up of musicians who are senior citizens. They practice Tuesdays and Thursdays at the United Community Center.

Since the beginning of 2016, they have been working with composer Joshua Backes from ComposeMilwaukee Outreach.

"We tried some experiments early and some of them were nervous about that. They hadn't been exposed to what we're trying to do," Backes said.

But with the help of band leader Alberto Cardenas, the band has been composing music with all kinds of influences.

"My point for this program is to teach music of Latin America: Argentina song, Mexico song, Puerto Rican song," Cardenas said.

Band member Margarita Sandoval Skare said she enjoys playing music from all over, "There are beautiful ballads. We have Mariachi music, cumbia- which are very happy of course."

The band hopes any senior with a love of music will consider joining the band.

"Maybe you play the congas. We would love to have congas. Maybe you play other percussion instruments. It would be wonderful!" said Sandoval Skare.

Grupo Renacer will play in a free concert Sunday, June 12 at Twisted Fisherman. Doors open at 2:30pm. The concert starts at 3:00pm. Musicians from Reagan High School and Bradley Tech High School will also be performing.
