GREEN BAY, Wis. -- A Greenleaf woman was charged in Brown County court Monday for allegedly driving drunk and hitting an Ashwaubenon officer with her SUV, causing significant injuries.
Kalin McGuire, 28, was charged with injury by intoxicated use of a vehicle and operating while intoxicated causing injury with a minor in the vehicle for allegedly hitting Officer Brian Murphy around 11:30 p.m. Saturday.
She's being held on a $20,000 cash bond.
McGuire told police she was driving back from a wedding reception with her husband and 18-month-old son when she struck Officer Murphy, according to a criminal complaint.
Her blood alcohol level was .125, court documents said. She told police she had between three and four mixed drinks at the reception.
According to the complaint, McGuire told officers she and her family left the reception at the Ramada Inn and were getting onto I-41 southbound at S. Oneida Street.
She said the saw a police car up ahead, and her husband told her stop, but she still hit the officer, court documents said. She said she was traveling about 45 mph and Officer Murphy hit the hood and fell forward to the ground, the complaint said.
Her husband said she was trying to move over to the left lanes when they saw Officer Murphy in the roadway, according to court documents. She tried to hit her brakes but it was too late, her husband told police.
Officer Murphy underwent two surgeries over the weekend, one for a head injury and the other to repair leg fractures, the complaint said.
He is in critical but stable condition, according to Ashwaubenon Public Safety. At this time, Officer Murphy's family is requesting privacy.
McGuire will be back in court on August 8. She cannot have any contact with Officer Murphy or his family. She also can't have alcohol or have presence in taverns/liquor stores. She will have a SCRAM (continuous alcohol monitoring) device installed prior to her release from jail.
