MILWAUKEE — Tax season is already underway, and a Milwaukee program is ready to prepare thousands this season, for free!
Johnnie Williams is walking out of the Social Development Commission on W. North Avenue happy, "This year I'm good!"
He's one of more than 6,000 people expected to get their taxes done for free in Milwaukee alone. It's thanks to SDC's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA).
More than 65 volunteers at various SDC locations will help people navigate through tax confusion.
This includes the IRS W-4 form makeover.
"Maybe last year they did get a refund but this year they're coming in and they're owing because they never made a change on the tax code with the W-4 with their employer," said Diane Robinson, SDC VITA Program Manager.
For Williams, he is thankful for all the help to get through it. He also discovered new opportunities at SDC.
"She was just introducing me to a small business venture thing that they have here to help you start a business. I signed up today to come down and see what they got to offer," said Williams.
Helping take a huge burden off people's shoulders, and find new opportunities.
"If they allow us to get back to them we'll give them resources that might fit their needs," said SDC CEO George Hinton.
In order to qualify for this program with SDC, you must have a combined family income of $58,000 or less.
It's best to sign up ahead of time, you can call their offices at (414) 206-2262 or click here to find the best location for you.
