FTC warns against phony Census jobs

With the 2020 U.S. Census, there are hundreds of thousands of temporary job openings. The pay is competitive. Depending on your location, you can earn up to $22 an hour here in Southeast Wisconsin.

But before you apply, the Federal Trade Commission is warning consumers of bad actors who post fake applications online. The agency said it happened during the 2010 Census and it wants people to be on the lookout for potential fraud.

On the Census website, consumers create a profile and fill out one job application. If you are hired, officials with the government agency will see which job would be the best fit for you. Some openings are for Census takers, others for supervisor or recruiter positions.

The most important thing to remember if you're applying to work for the U.S. Census Bureau is, you don't have to pay to apply for the job. Federal agencies never charge application fees, so if that's happening, the Federal Trade Commission says it's a scam.

When you apply for this government job, you need to give out your Social Security number, your address, date of birth and other contact information. You might feel a little uncomfortable providing that, but the U.S. Census Bureau does a background check on people applying.

It may be several weeks or months before hiring starts in your area. An interviewer will reach out if interested
