MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- A retired Madison police chief has been chosen to lead a new U.S. Department of Justice initiative focused on improving police practices and accountability.
Director Ronald Davis of the federal agency's Community Oriented Police Services announced Wednesday that Noble Wray will lead the Policing Practices and Accountability Initiative.
The Justice Department said in a news release that Wray will oversee "collaborative reform and critical response technical assistance programs." He also will provide crisis response services and help police agencies develop strategies to implement task force recommendations.
It's unclear whether Wray will be required to move to Washington, D.C. for the new position. He couldn't be reached for comment Wednesday.
Wray, a Milwaukee native, served nearly 30 years with the Madison Police Department. He retired in September 2013.
