'You feel like you’re going to tip over:' Strong winds pose challenge for travelers

MILWAUKEE — Rain and snow showers are possible Wednesday, but winds forecast to reach up to 50 mph may impact travel plans.

As the scramble to Thanksgiving begins there is always a chance weather could throw a wrench in travel plans. That goes for pilots as well.

"The pilots are trained to handle what mother nature throws at them but there are certain limits," said retired pilot John Palese.

Palese was a captain for American Airlines for nearly 25 years. He says wind speeds predicted for Wednesday could pose a challenge for pilots.

"You have to balance the need to go faster because of the strong winds versus do we have enough concrete in front of us to safely land and stop," said Palese.

In the air, pilots may also combat turbulence.

On the roads, drivers will also feel the brunt of gusty winds.

"Feels pretty bad like you feel like you’re going to tip over," said Sergio Ortega.

Ortega has driven trucks for 17 years. He says when the winds are harsh he has to adapt.

"It’ll help if you lower your speed to 35, depends on what you’re hauling. If you’re hauling heavy or if you’re empty especially you got to lower your speed," said Ortega.

The message to all travelers before the mad dash--be patient and understanding.
