MILWAUKEE -- Embattled Milwaukee County Register of Deeds John LaFave will retire April 12, according to a statement from his office obtained by TODAY'S TMJ4.

LaFave spent more than 15 years in a low-key county post until February, when his office in the courthouse building was raided by federal investigators.

In the statement, dated for release on April 9, LaFave does not mention the federal probe or the search warrants executed on his office.

"It was always my intention to retire before my 70th birthday," it quotes LaFave.

The news release then lists a number of LaFave's accomplishments in the county office that handles real estate documents.

Reached late Monday, LaFave's attorney Michael Maistelman declined to comment on the statement or the state of the federal investigation.
