MILWAUKEE -- With a hot and humid weather forecast for much of our region over the next several days, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation motorists to be extra alert for the potential of pavement buckling and for highway crews making needed repairs.

“While it’s difficult to predict where pavement buckling may occur, the problem is most common during the first few major heat waves of the season,” said WisDOT Pavements and Materials Engineer Barry Paye. “The hot weather causes slabs of pavement to expand and push against each other which can result in buckling if the pressure becomes great enough.”

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation Offers Motorists The Following Tips:

  • Before your trip, check the 511 Travel Information system for the latest on any incidents or delays.
  • Always buckle up, watch your speed and stay focused on the road ahead so you’ll have more time to react to pavement problems, debris in the roadway or slowing traffic.
  • Be ready to slow down and move over for emergency responders and all roadside workers including highway crews as they repair damaged pavement.
  • If necessary, report serious pavement issues by calling 911. Be ready to provide specific location information.
