RACINE — A domestic disturbance turned deadly in Racine, according to a criminal complaint.
Lapiate P. Boone, 39, was charged with first-degree intentional homicide, use of a dangerous weapon; and attempted first-degree intentional homicide, use of a dangerous weapon, domestic abuse after an incident in the 3800 block of North Bay Drive early Thursday. His warrant was set at $1 million.
The incident resulted in the death of Gene Smith 35, due to a stabbing, police said. Joy Reid, a 36-year-old woman, was injured and was in critical condition, according to police.
Reid reportedly went to the residence to see her children, who are 16 and 11. Boone is the father of the children. Reid lived at the residence with Boone until September, when she reportedly moved out of the house because of problems in their relationship.
Reid was at the house from about 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday, when she and Boone began to argue. Boone allegedly became angry and stabbed Reid in the back of her leg with a kitchen knife, according to the criminal complaint.
She immediately left the home with her children, and the 16-year-old drove her to the hospital for treatment.
After being treated, Reid and Smith, a friend, returned to the house to get the children’s school bags and some clothes. Boone was not home when they arrived, but he returned while they were packing some things, according to the complaint.
Boone allegedly was still angry when he returned and began striking Reid with a large pole in the living room. The male friend tried to get between them, but Boone reportedly began hitting Smith, too.
The three moved into the kitchen area, according to the complaint, and Boone reportedly grabbed a knife from a cutting block that was on the kitchen counter. Boone allegedly stabbed Reid and Smith, who continued to try to intervene. The three went out the back door into the backyard. Boone reportedly fled from the yard, leaving Reid on the ground. Smith returned to the house and tried to call 911 from his phone.
The children were inside the home and attempted to use towels to stop Smith's bleeding. He reportedly was badly wounded in his chest area and his upper left thigh and head. Rescue arrived on scene and began care, but Smith died before he could be treated at the hospital, according to the complaint.
Reid was found in the backyard. She reportedly was slashed across her face and had new wounds on her right arm and puncture wounds to her back torso.
