MILWAUKEE — Divers have called off their search for a person in the Milwaukee River after a police chase ended in a crash Wednesday evening.

The Milwaukee Police Department tells TMJ4 News that officers attempted to stop a vehicle for disregarding a red light and not having registration plates near 5th and Mitchell around 7:25 p.m.

The driver did not stop, though, which prompted police to chase the vehicle for about one minute. That's when the driver lost control and rolled down an embankment at Water and Pittsburgh.

The vehicle came to a rest on the edge of the Milwaukee River.

Two people were recovered from the vehicle, a 38-year-old man and a 37-year-old woman, and were sent to the hospital for treatment.

Divers searched for a possible third person in the river, who may have been in that vehicle, but called it off just before 10 p.m. Wednesday.v

The investigation is ongoing.
