Across Milwaukee the community is stepping up and helping those in need escape the brutal cold temperatures.

On the south side of the city, the Cultural Institute of Dance has opened it’s doors to those who need a warm place to stay.

Owner Manuel Gaona said he was at home this weekend when he saw the news of someone dying because of the cold weather and knew he had to help.

“I don’t have money to offer anybody, but I have my place,” said Gaona.

He posted a video on Facebook inviting anyone in need to stop by. It now has more than 500,000 views and 15,000 shares. Tuesday night 23 people stayed at his makeshift shelter, Wednesay he is expecting more.

“Somebody coming I open the door. I don’t ask them for nothing, I just want somebody sleeping here safe and warm," he said.

The Milwaukee Street Angels were canvassing the streets again, as they have the last few nights the temperatures have been so cold. Wednesday night they offered a few rides to shelters in their bus, but only to those who had been at warming centers throughout the day.

“Because the warming rooms were open all day today many folks stayed the day today. That’s absolutely wonderful, we’re hoping that we don’t find anybody tonight,” said Eva Welch.
