MILWAUKEE — Two Milwaukee Common Council Members are asking for answers in an incident that involved an off-duty police officer.

Milwaukee police said they reported to a battery complaint on April 19 just before 8 a.m. near 45th and Cleveland. When officers arrived on scene, a 25-year-old man was found unresponsive.

Michael Mattioli, 32, was taken into custody at the scene. Police say Mattioli is a 13-year veteran of the Milwaukee Police Department. According to police, Mattioli seriously injured another man during a fight.

Mattioli was being held at the Milwaukee County Jail for first degree reckless injury and strangulation and suffocation. He was released on April 22 after posting bond.

Alderwomen Milele Coggs and Nikiya Dodd introduced a communications file to allow Common Council members to discuss and ask questions about Mattioli's arrest.

The communications file requests Milwaukee police attend a Public Safety and Health Committee meeting on May 14 at City Hall to discuss the incident and allow council members to discuss and ask questions about the incident, including punishment the officer may face.
