MILWAUKEE — The second Monday of October every year will now be known as Indigenous Peoples' Day.

On Tuesday, the Common Council designated the second Monday of every October to be Indigenous Peoples' Day in Milwaukee.

"This is truly a great way to celebrate the history, culture and positive impact that indigenous people have had in our community throughout history," said Alderwoman Chantia Lewis.

According to the Common Council, this legislation recognizes how Native Americans have existed in Wisconsin for more than 10,000 years and how they continue to play an important role in Wisconsin's communities, culture and economy.

Several communities throughout Wisconsin have recognized Indigenous Peoples' Day in the past including Madison in 2005 and 2016, Milwaukee County in 2017 and Dane County in 2017.

Wisconsin is home to 11 indigenous tribes, who contribute to state and local economies, and 86,000 Native Americans.
