MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Defense attorneys for a former Milwaukee officer on trial for fatally shooting a black man have rested their case.
Attorneys for Dominique Heaggan-Brown called an expert in the use of deadly force as their only witness for the former officer charged with first-degree reckless homicide.
Heaggan-Brown killed Sylville Smith after a foot chase following a traffic stop Aug. 13. The shooting that sparked unrest in the predominantly black neighborhood where it happened.
Heaggan-Brown's attorneys said he acted in self-defense because Smith had a firearm and their expert, Robert Willis, testified Monday that Heaggan-Brown "acted in accordance with his training."
Prosecutors say Smith was defenseless because he threw away his gun before Heaggan-Brown fatally shot him.
Closing arguments in the case are expected Tuesday morning.
