MILWAUKEE — The city of Milwaukee has just broken the record for the number of homicides in one year.
Back in 1991, the city set the record at 165. Now, that record has been broken after the Milwaukee Police Department reported two additional homicides over the weekend.
The two victims over the weekend were a 28-year-old male and a 16-year-old male.
On Oct. 22, Milwaukee had already reported 155 homicides. Less than a month later, more than 10 homicides have been reported therefore breaking the record that has been around for almost 29 years.
The homicide numbers this year do not appear to be following trends from recent years where the city experienced record lows.
MPD recorded homicides in the following years:
- 2015 - 147 homicides
- 2016 - 142 homicides
- 2017 - 119 homicides
- 2018 - 99 homicides
- 2019 - 97 homicides
The news comes after Milwaukee County broke the record for the number of homicides in a yearwith 174 as of Oct. 26. That record was set back in 1993.
