WAUWATOSA — Bystanders and neighbors were able to rescue a dog from a burning home Tuesday morning prior to first responders arriving on the scene.

The Wauwatosa Fire Department responded to a house fire at 6825 W. Terrace Ct. around 10:14 a.m. Tuesday. When they arrived, they found a 'moderate' fire and smoke coming from the attic of the single-family home.

With assistance from the Milwaukee Fire Department, Wauwatosa fire crews had the fire under control in under 30 minutes.

At the time, the homeowner was at work, but neighbors and bystanders were able to call 911 and rescue the homeowner's dog. However, the fire did cause significant damage to the home.

The American Red Cross and We Energies were called to assist.

One bystander was evaluated on the scene for smoke inhalation, but no one was seriously injured.

According to the Wauwatosa Fire Department, the cause of the fire is unknown, but it likely started in the entryway of the home. The fire investigation is under review by the Wauwatosa Fire Marshall.
