BROOKFIELD — "He had fun. He decided to stick around for 38 years," Dave Steinbach says.
His name is Dave Steinbach but he'd prefer, something else.
In an interview with Lance Allan, Steinbach was wearing a shirt that said Coach Steinbach. After all these years, do people not even call you Dave? Do they call you coach?
"Hopefully. I'd rather be called coach," Steinbach says. "It's a title. It's a title of honor."
Steinbach coached four high school sports, and two rec sports in Brookfield. But, he'll always be known for tennis at Brookfield Central.
"Well, I obviously know that there's 13 state titles, and 13 runner ups," Steinbach says. "But I don't know the conference, and the conference and the sectional tournaments."
And more than 1,100 wins. But one of his biggest accomplishments? Letting the kids play.
"We obviously take pride in being successful," Steinbach says. "But I think the thing that distinguishes our program is that we don't cut players."
His lessons will carry on, for a lifetime.
"We do the 16-second cure in all of our drills which is unique to anybody else's program," Steinbach says.
But, what is a 16-second cure?
"Four r's. First two seconds is a response stage. Second, 6 to 8 seconds is a relaxation stage. Third is a ready stage. And fourth is a ritual stage," Steinbach says.
Success on the court, with his athletes succeeding in life. A job well done.
