WAUSAU, Wis. (AP) -- A judge has sentenced a 16-year-old Wausau boy who fatally stabbed a 13-year-old boy during a suspected gang confrontation to 13 years in prison.
Dylan Yang was found guilty in March of first-degree reckless homicide in the killing of Isaiah Powell on Feb. 27, 2015.
During a nearly eight-hour sentencing hearing Wednesday, Marathon County Circuit Judge LaMont Jacobson told Yang that a life was "needlessly lost" at his hands.
Yang told the judge he was sorry, and Jacobson said he believed Yang was remorseful.
During his trial, Yang admitted stabbing Powell but said he thought Powell had a real gun -- not a BB gun.
Jacobson ordered Yang to serve 17 years on extended supervision after his release. The state sought 25 years in prison and 20 years of probation
