Assembly speaker says he'd rather up aid than UW cut tuition

Posted
MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Republican Assembly Speaker Robin Vos says he would rather increase financial aid than cut tuition for students at the University of Wisconsin System.

Vos made the comment Wednesday at a forum hosted by the website Wispolitics.com. Gov. Scott Walker announced this month that he plans to propose cutting tuition for all in-state undergraduate students at UW. Vos and other Republican Assembly leaders have been lukewarm to the tuition cut idea.
Vos says his priority would be increasing aid so the students who are in the greatest financial need benefit more.

Vos says, "Do I think a goal should be to cut tuition? That wouldn't by my goal."

Walker hasn't released details of his tuition cut plan. Those will come in his state budget that is released next month.
