**Update -- The 28-year-old man succumbed to his injuries, police say**
Several streets were partially closed downtown Saturday after witnesses said a police chase ended in a crash.
Milwaukee firefighters said the crash happened at the intersection of Water and Michigan St.
Fire crews said they got the call at 6:22 p.m. The first rescue divers went into the water at 6:36 p.m. The man was pulled from the water at 6:44 p.m.
"It seems like everybody in the City has responded,” said Steve Haupt, who was having a riverside dinner when he learned what happened just blocks north.
Witnesses said the man was trying to get away from police when he crashed into two other cars on Water St. and Michigan St.
"I see this blue vehicle coming straight toward me with a police officer chasing right behind him,” said witness Jeremy Erskine.
Erskine took a picture of the man after the crash. He says the alleged suspect ran by him while making a break for the Riverwalk and ultimately, the river.
His [Lexus vehicle] was obviously out of commission and I don't know what kind of Grand Theft Auto thinking fool he is. Take my car and drive off,” Erskine.
People downtown say despite the inconvenience they're hoping everyone involved is okay.
"I hope everybody is okay. It's just too beautiful of a day here,” Haupt said.
