OAK CREEK, Wis. (AP) -- Officials say a woman has died after being pulled from a fire at a home in Oak Creek.
The fire started shortly before 11:00 p.m. Monday night in a home in the Oak Creek Estates Community near 20th Street and College Avenue.
Authorities identified the 54-year-old woman who died as Linda Pearson. According to neighbors, she was the resident's girlfriend. Police say she lived in Brookfield.
"I couldn't believe when I heard about Linda," said Dorothy Kostecki, who lives next door to the home. "She was there a lot, but I met her because she came over and introduced herself, we had coffee together and we'd talk once in awhile."
Fire officials say a 25-year-old man escaped the home and told responding firefighters that Pearson was still inside. Neighbors say the 25-year-old is the resident's son.
Both were taken to the hospital but Pearson did not survive. The 25-year-old received burn injuries but he's expected to be okay.
A family pet also died in the fire.
Investigators are still determining what caused the fire.
The Red Cross is providing assistance, and says house fires are the most common disaster they respond to. The Red Cross says it typically responds to 1,000 house fires a year in Wisconsin.
