Milwaukee mask ordinance passes committee, advances to Common Council Monday

A slightly modified 'MKE Cares' Act, the proposed ordinance that would mandate wearing face masks in Milwaukee, passed a Public Health and Safety Committee meeting on Thursday, advancing to a Monday Common Council Meeting.

There have been some changes made to the ordinance since it was first introduced by Alderwoman Marina Dimitrijevic.

Originally, the ordinance would have required Milwaukeeans to wear a mask outside if they were within 30 feet of someone not from their family or household. That has been changed to six feet, in line with CDC social distancing guidance.

The new ordinance also requires anyone three years of age or older to wear a mask. Previously, that was set at two years old.

What hasn't changed is that everyone will need to wear a mask inside any 'indoor public space' under the proposal.

“It’s great to have had a community discussion over the past few days about mask use to protect our neighbors. We’ve taken your feedback and combined it with science and best practices to develop a MKE Cares plan that will keep us all safe. We won’t regret requiring people to cover their faces in this pandemic, but will regret it if we don’t," Alderwoman Dimitrijevic said in a news release.

The meeting with the Common Council is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Monday.
