SUAMICO (NBC 26) -- A Bay Port High School teacher has died after being hospitalized for coronavirus, school officials announced Thursday.

In an email to parents, the Howard Suamico School District said Heidi Hussli, a teacher at Bay Port High School, died following a brief hospitalization related to COVID-19. A statement from Hussli's family thanked the staff of St. Mary's Hospital for their professionalism and care.

The school district said it was notified of Hussli's death Thursday morning. Building Crisis Teams convened in the building to support students and staff.

The school district also said the PIRATE Time Plus meetings are canceled Friday. Additionally, school officials said Bay Port High School will pause its learning plan next Monday and Tuesday. Students and staff won't participate in online learning or in-person activities, but the school will be open for students and staff who want support. Counselors are also being made available.

Bay Port High School has reported multiple cases of coronavirus. A staff member tested positive for coronavirus in August. The Howard-Suamico School District also confirmed five COVID-19 cases at the high school earlier this month.
