1 dead in fall at Oak Creek Amazon construction site

An equipment operator at a future Amazon fulfillment center in Oak Creek has died after falling nearly 30-40 feet Wednesday.

The operator with Lewis Construction, Inc. drove a piece of equipment out an open window and fell to his death, according to the Oak Creek Police Department.

The victim was transported to Froedtert Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The construction company released this statement on the incident:

“Earlier today a member of our team was in a tragic accident at the Amazon construction site in Oak Creek. We are devastated to learn that this incident has resulted in the passing of this team member.

We have been working at this site for months and have numerous safety procedures in place for the construction of this facility. The safety of our workers is paramount to our operation and we are proactively working with investigators to better understand how this accident occurred.

We thank the first responders from the Oak Creek Fire and Police Departments and the medical professionals from Froedtert Hospital for their amazing work in this situation. Due to the nature of this investigation and out of respect to the loved ones of the team member we lost, we will have no further comment at this time.”

The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner will perform an autopsy on July 11.

The $200 million, 2.6 million square foot Amazon fulfillment center near 13th and Ryan Rd. in Oak Creek is slated to be completed by the end of 2020.

This is an ongoing investigation by the Oak Creek Police Department in coordination with the Milwaukee County District Attorney's office and OSHA investigators.
