Wintry mix of rain, sleet and light snow starts Thursday morning

and last updated 2021-02-03 23:32:34-05

After a cold morning with lows in the single digits for areas away from the lake, we warmed up rapidly with a lot of sunshine, a light breeze and highs in the low to mid 30s. The clouds started to move in this afternoon ahead of the next storm system that will be here Thursday morning. All of SE WI is under a Winter Weather Advisory from 7am Thursday until noon Friday.

We are much warmer tonight with lows in the upper 20s thanks to clouds and a southerly wind. Thursday warms into the mid 30s before noon and that is why the morning will see a wintry mix of rain, sleet and light snow before it becomes all snow in the afternoon and evening. The roads will be wet for the morning commute and be snow-covered and slick for the afternoon commute. This is a quick-moving storm system and the primetime for snow accumulation is noon until 7pm and then the snow tapers off before 10pm. Snow accumulations will be 2-4" from Milwaukee to Waukesha and south, and 4-6" for areas further west and north of Milwaukee.

This will be heavy wet snow with the warmer temps and try to shovel it before too late Thursday because then it gets cold and windy. Winds will be gusting to 40 mph Thursday night and Friday causing a lot of blowing snow. That is why the advisory goes until noon on Friday. Friday morning will be in the single digits with wind chills to -15. Friday afternoon is only 8 with wind chills below zero all day. The weekend is arctic with lows to -12 inland and wind chills to -30 Sunday morning and Monday morning. Highs temps both days will be barely above 0.
