Dry start then wintry mix on Monday

and last updated 2020-02-16 23:43:12-05

It has been a fantastic Sunday in the weather department with highs in the low 30s and a much lighter wind making it easier to enjoy the sunshine. The clouds roll back in this evening with an isolated chance of a flurry but the majority of southeastern Wisconsin will stay dry and mostly cloudy tonight with low 20s expected.

The next storm system moves in on Monday but it appears to be slowing down so that will make the morning commute easier with just the chance for a few flurries early on. By late morning snow showers will start to spread across southeastern Wisconsin, changing to a rain-snow mix by noon in Milwaukee and southward. Snow will continue in the northwest where 1-3" of snow is possible but from Milwaukee southward the temperatures will be in the upper-30s so rain is more likely there and some spots will see a quarter of an inch of rain through the evening hours. There may be a period of sleet and snow as the cold front sweeps through close to midnight, ending the precipitation and slowly bringing the cold air behind it so be wary of some icy spots on Tuesday as temperatures will be mainly in the 20s through the day. It will be breezy on Tuesday with clearing skies so that will help dry up some of the water in the south.

A brief cold spell arrives for Wednesday and Thursday with highs struggling to reach 20 degrees and several single digit low temperatures but skies will be sunny thanks to a large area of high pressure. The back side of the high brings a breezy southerly wind heading into Friday to boost temps back up to freezing and 40s return for the weekend with continuous sunshine and a nice stretch.
