This Movie Theater Lets You Watch Movies While Relaxing In Double Beds

Few things in life feel as cozy as snuggling up in bed to watch a movie. And now that you have so many options to watch at home on your streaming devices, the appeal of hauling off to the movie theater has waned. After all, there are no beds there!

A theater chain in Switzerland is fixing that problem, though: Cinémas Pathé opened a brand-new location in Spreitenbach, Aargau last week that includes one theater full of beds.

They’re double beds, even backed with cushiony headboards and bedside tables close at hand. The “VIP Bed” auditorium holds only 11 beds on its four levels — enough room for 22 luxuriating viewers. Pillows and blankies are included, naturally.

See for yourself!

The theater chain posted a picture of the special theater on its Facebook account recently.

“The hygiene aspect is very important,” Venanzio Di Bacco, Pathé Switzerland’s CEO, told local news website 20 minuten. They’ll be changing the bed sheets after every screening. Good to know!

Tickets for the “VIP Bed” theater run about $49 Swiss francs ($49 U.S.) per person. Though a bit pricey, for sure, the ticket includes unlimited soft drinks and snacks (like popcorn, ice cream, nachos and M&Ms). Guests also get to arrive 30 minutes early to the showing to maximize their snack time.

If the bed thing sounds a bit too odd for you, there’s also a “VIP Lounge” ticket. It costs the same and offers single-size sofas and loveseats with room to stretch out.

For serious lovers of spectacle, “VIP IMAX” tickets get you special “cocoon” balcony seating for about $49 — plus additional surcharges for the IMAX theater and for 3D screenings.

Be aware that this does add some more to your overall cost, though. It ends up being $22 plus $3 for 3D glasses — yikes!

This is an area where we’re lagging in the States — I couldn’t find any theaters that offer beds as an option.

There are a few with unconventional seating, though, like vintage furniture and beanbags at the New Parkway Theater in Oakland, California, seen below.

The idea must be catching on, though: Two totally separate outdoor cinemas are planning tours across North America this year, with inflatable air mattresses as the main attraction.

The somewhat mysterious Bed Cinema is supposed to hit cities like Los Angeles, Denver and Toronto this year. Visit the website to get a heads-up when details are available.

An Australian version called Mov’in Bed is teasing a run across the U.S., as well. It boasts an outdoor movie-watching set-up like the one pictured below:

Here’s another post from the company’s Instagram account, featuring an image of a couple of happy-looking customers.

As lovely as this all looks, I’m known to pass out within minutes of starting almost any movie. Putting me on a bed in front of a television is unlikely to result in entertainment, sadly.

What do you think? Is this the greatest idea ever or a recipe for a very expensive nap?
