When Oakland, California’s school district announced it was closing through April 5 due to the coronavirus, NBA player Stephen Curry and his wife, Ayesha, wanted to do something to help the students who rely on school meals for their daily food intake.

So they are asking people to rally around their efforts to provide 1 million meals to a local food bank and help kids who might have less to eat while schools are out.

More than 18,000 kids in the Oakland area rely on school for two or more meals a day, the Currys said in a video posted to social media.

“We want to make sure that we rally around everyone and that ensure that these kids are not wondering where their next meal is coming from,” Ayesha Curry said.

The Currys’ “Eat. Learn. Play. Foundation,” which focuses on three things kids need to be successful in life, is coordinating their efforts with the Oakland Unified School District and the Alameda County Community Food Bank.

They’ve provided a donation page so that people can join their campaign to reach 1 million meals.

Additionally, Curry and his Golden State Warriors teammates and management are donating $1 million to a fund that will help part-time employees who work at the team’s home base, the Chase Center in San Francisco. Many of those workers are now unemployed due to the NBA suspending its current season in light of COVID-19.

The basketball star also recently posted a PSA-style social media video encouraging everyone to follow CDC recommendations to maintain six feet of personal space from other people while in public, aka “social distancing,” and to wash their hands frequently with soap and water.

“We all have to take responsibility for ourselves and do whatever it takes to #stopthespread,” he said. “There’s a sense of urgency to flatten the curve and give ourselves and the healthcare system the best chance to get through this pandemic.”

Curry and his wife are certainly making the most of their downtime during the coronavirus outbreak. How inspiring!
