Wisconsin basketball is now ranked seventh in the country in the Monday's AP Poll. This is the highest the Badgers (20-3, 9-1 Big Ten) have been ranked all season.
Undefeated Gonzaga held onto the top spot, but chaos flooded the ranks below. Six top 10 teams lost Saturday, marking only the fifth time in history which that many top 10 teams fell. Villanova, Kansas, Louisville, and Oregon round out the rest of the top five.
After losing two of their first six games of the season, Wisconsin has now won 16 of their last 17, and seven in a row. The Badgers are in first place in the Big Ten, one game ahead of the Maryland Terrapins. Wisconsin hosts Maryland on February 19th.
While the Badgers are rolling right now, the rest of the Big Ten is in a bit of a slump. Only three teams are currently ranked by AP voters (Wisconsin, Maryland, and Purdue), and typical powers Michigan and Indiana are in danger of missing the NCAA tournament. Even Tom Izzo’s Michigan State Spartans have suffered through their fair share of bumps, although they are still projected to find their way into the field of 68.
In Wisconsin’s last seven games, they have played just one top 50 RPI team (Minnesota). The remainder of the schedule does get a little tougher though, as the Badgers have to play four tournament-projected squads.
Wisconsin’s next game is at Nebraska (10-13, 4-7) on Thursday.
