Several groups hold Rio Opening Ceremony parties

MILWAUKEE -- Brazilians in Milwaukee can't wait for the opening ceremony to start.  Some viewing parties are bigger than others.

One is called "the Rio Party," and it's for members only at the Milwaukee Athletic Club.  They have a lot to do on the rooftop Friday evening.  Members will be tasting a little paella, and watching the opening ceremony, projected on an outdoor wall. Finding decorations for the event wasn't easy.

"Well almost all the things to do with an Olympic thing were sold out. So that was sold out and also we did look at some Brazilian things and also a lot of the Brazilian stuff was also sold out," said Brad Schendel of the Milwaukee Athletic Club.

Patrick Bieser's planning his own viewing party, on behalf of the original Milwaukee running group.

"I like the parade of athletes. It's always fun to look at the big countries and the small countries as they come in and it's neat to look at their uniforms," said Bieser.

One of the bigger parties, open to the public, will be at Nomad. Simone Conceicao, who grew up in Brazil, may just watch the Olympics at home. But thanks to Skype, she won't be watching alone.

"I'll feel like I will be there but really I'm here, but I will be part of the whole celebration together," said Conceicao.

Conceicao was visiting family back home in Brazil last month.

"Mainly the big airports like San Paulo, they have stores just for the Olympics, so you find everything. Actually on my way back from Brazil, I bought the mascot to celebrate the Olympics.  So, I'm looking forward to it," said Conceicao.

If you don't get out to one of the viewing parties Friday night, not to worry, we found a number of others happening in the Milwaukee area in the coming weeks.
