Former wide receiver Ty Montgomery will remain at running back next season, Packers head coach Mike McCarthy said this week.

Montgomery was forced into tailback duty beginning week 6 after injuries to Eddie Lacy and James Starks. From then on, he totaled 451 yards on 72 rushes. He ran for another 91 yards in the postseason.

Montgomery will trade in his number 88 jersey for a new number in 2017. Running backs can wear any number from 20-49.

Montgomery only played in six games as a rookie wide receiver. He caught 15 balls for 136 yards. He actually took a much larger role in the passing game once he suited up at running back. Including the playoffs, he hauled in 44 passes from week six onward.

This Montgomery news could spell doom for Lacy in Green Bay. The 2013 Offensive Rookie of the Year is now a free agent, and has struggled with injuries and weight issues over the past two seasons.
