No Clay Matthews or fans at Packers' last public OTA

On Monday, the Green Bay Packers had a few missing things at their final public organized team activities.

One of them was the presence of linebacker Clay Matthews. He missed Monday's action among many starters and other key contributors.

Some of them were in attendance - like wide receiver Jordy Nelson and guard T.J. Lang. However, they didn't participate in every drill.

Coach Mike McCarthy wouldn't elaborate on the presence or status of injured players, only speaking about Jared Cook, the tight end who missed as well after his foot surgery.

McCarthy said he had no long-term concern about Cook, and added he's "doing very well, a very good fit for us, a veteran football player, bring a lot of the table."

"The transition into a new language, everybody goes through (it)....glad he's here."

The other missing piece to the puzzle - the fans.

Normally, fans are welcome to watch specific public OTA's at Ray Nitschke Field. However, as they were about to begin, heavy rain and lightning pounded the area, forcing practice inside - and out of public view.

Among the highlights:
- Aaron Rodgers and Jeff Janis almost replicated their heroics from the final play of regulation in the NFC Divisional Playoff game against Arizona.

During a play in the latter part of practice, Rodgers rolled left and launched a rainbow of a throw into a one-on-one coverage situation.

Janis won a tip drill, caught the ball at about the five yard line and took it into the end zone for a high-celebration touchdown filled with yells from players asking reporters to tweet about it.

"Jeff's a big target that can go deep. The play he made today was really good concentration on his part, competing through the interaction with the DB, tipping the ball," said McCarthy,

"He needs to continue to progress through the fundamentals of the position. Special teams, had an excellent year last year...one of our top players. I'd like to see him take that same step at wide receiver."

In general, McCarthy praised the offensive performance on Monday.

"The offense did some really good things today. It's the installation phase, said the coach.

"These are big-time challenges mentally for our guys. You can see it's starting to come together."
