Park Tavern gets backlash for hosting pep rally

An Atlanta bar is feeling the heat for being a Green Bay Packers hangout.

Park Tavern, an official Packers bar, plans to host a pep rally for fans on Saturday, but some Falcons faithful aren’t happy about it.

The hashtag #BoycottParkTavern began trending in Atlanta this week.

Some Falcons fans took to Twitter to express their displeasure with the bar for hosting the event, including quarter Matt Ryan’s wife, who posted an anger emoji.

Others were more direct, suggesting that Falcons fans are the ones that keep them in business.

The event will go on as planned, but the bar owners are trying to keep both sides happy — releasing a statement saying they are actually rooting for the Falcons to make to the Super Bowl and that “it was not our intent to offend any Falcons fans, we realize that we did with our choice to host this event and apologize.”

But not all Atlanta residents are in support of the boycott, including those who live close to the bar in the Piedmont Park area.

“It’s just extremism. I disavow that. I’m a native Atlantan. I’ve been a Falcon fan since they came to Atlanta,” Larry Karp said.

Saturday’s rally takes place at 6 p.m. Packers President/CEO Mark Murphy will greet fans and take part in a Q-and-A session with 620 WTMJ Packers radio host Wayne Larrivee.

Packers alumni Don Majkowski, Ezra Johnson and David Whitehurst are also expected to attend.
