He brought baseball back to Milwaukee and shepherded it to long-term stability. He also was Major League Baseball's chief executive for longer than all but one commissioner.
Bud Selig has been named a finalist for the Baseball Hall of Fame by the "Today's Game Committee," along with five players, two managers and two other baseball executives.
MLB says that the final vote from that committee will happen on Dec. 5 at the MLB winter meetings in Maryland.
If 15 of 20 committee members approve Selig, he will join the Hall of Fame next year.
Selig played the lead role of bringing baseball back to the Brew City after the Braves departed in 1965. He bought the Seattle Pilots in March 1970 and moved the team to County Stadium.
Then, in the late 1990's, he led the charge for public funding of the construction of Miller Park, which will keep the Brewers in town for decades to come.
Selig was the Brewers' owner from 1970 through 1998, when he gave the club to daughter Wendy Selig-Prieb upon taking the permanent job of commissioner that year.
He previously had served as acting commissioner from 1992-1998. He held the permanent job until 2015, keeping his permanent office in Milwaukee.
